NEWS FROM THE GROTTO

On Sunday 20th January, Monsignor Anton Agreiter commissioned Mrs Mathil Bowden and Mr Tom Ramsey as Eucharistic Ministers. In this capacity they will conduct a Communion Service at the Grotto each Sunday at 7.00pm.

A communion Service consists of (1) a Liturgy of the Word, (Bible readings, Homily, prayers) and (2) the distribution of holy communion from the supply consecrated by Monsignor Agreiter and kept in the wall tabernacle at the Grotto.

Anybody is welcome at the Grotto, anytime, day or night. It is always open. It is amazing how many people do go there to pray and/or for a moment of peace and quiet.

ST.HELENA POLICE

ASCENSION DETACHMENT

Arriving from St, Helena on Monday 11th February 2002 will be Derek Thomas Chief of Police who will be making an Official visit to the Ascension Police Detachment. This visit has been built in the St Helena Business Plan and it is his first visit since taking command of the St Helena Police Force in June of last year. It is important for him to make such visit. The very reason being is that he needs to assess the Detachment who are currently working towards the Business Plan of St Helena. Policing of Ascension Island is some what different to that of St Helena. Therefore it is of utmost importance that we meet the needs of the people of Ascension. In order that we achieve these objectives we must first have a Business Plan for the Detachment. This is the high light of his visit coupled with having to met with Heads of Organisations and to met and inspect members of his staff. We cannot have a Business Plan to accommodate the needs of the Detachment only, therefore we must seen to be seeking the views of the general public in formulating a Plan. At 7,30pm that evening it has been arrange for a Public Meeting in the Georgetown Cinema to discuss these proposals. We are here to deliver a quality of service to the community of Ascension Island. So do come along and support your local Police Force and without your invaluable contributions it will be difficult to formulate a plan. We look forward to your cooperation in this very important meeting. To remind you of this meeting there will be a repeat of this before the Chiefs arrival and to include notices publish throughout the Island.

Activity for the out going week we received and dealt with Five reports. Under investigation is report of a theft of a camera which was allegedly stolen from the Mountain View Club. For security reasons I will once again remind you of having to leave your property left lying around. Please ensure that it is secured away from prying eyes. Still staying with the aforementioned Club a disturbance occurred with several Service personnel resulting into four louver windows of the club being broken and some drinking glasses. This matter was dealt with in conjunction with the RAF Police. One hit and run Road Traffic Accident occurred in the town centre which is under investigation and the other occurred on the road to the Airhead. The driver of the latter was breath tested and found to be free from alcohol. The other report was of a minor nature with the appropriate action taken.

Insp. of Police

From the Editors:- Tony Jenkins

Back Again.

This is my first sit in this chair since 27th November, I tried everything to get out of editing tonight, but there was a conspiracy of silence, a lack of volunteers, so here I am.

A rather slim edition this week I am afraid, but never mind the quality feel the width as they say.

Could I remind contributors that the preferred means of receiving copy is by e-mail to Islander@atlantis.co.ac, or on floppy disk. If you have no access to these means then by all means send in on paper and we shall do our best to fit it in.

By now most people will have received their income tax allowances, and the value of benefits in kind. The 1st April is getting closer and closer and this tax business now appears to be more real.

I am a young stamp collector and trying to expand my collection to include other countries. I would love to add some recent used stamps from Ascension Island to my collection. I would like to ask if it would be possible to send me some used stamps from incoming mail. If some are the same then that is OK because some of my friends are keen collectors like me. Thankyou very much for your time this would be really special for me. I hope that I might be fortunate enough to hear from you.

From Richard Barrett (esg@merlin.net.au)
My name is Richard Barrett and I am researching transport aircraft accidents which occurred prior to 1950. Recently I discovered that a United States Army Air Force transport aircraft crashed at Ascension Island during World War II with the death of around fifty servicemen.
It appears that the aircraft was taking servicemen form the China, Burma, India (CBI) Theatre home to the United States and that a number of them had been working in Africa repairing damaged British and American aircraft.
So far I have been unable to obtain any details of the crash and wonder if you or any of your readers would have information about this crash - or indeed and other crash of transport aircraft - in your area.
I am particularly interested in discovering the date of the event,, number of people onboard, number killed. Aircraft type, tail number and circumstances of the crash.
It may be that the dead were buried on the island as the one report I have suggests that the aircraft struck high ground rather than going into the sea.

Any information you may be able to provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Richard Barrett.

Monday saw Makem and Rambling Roger have a quiet day at the basha's, soaking up the sunshine, then it was off to the VC for tea, where we were joined by Bill (Air Traffic). Fifer was playing the taxi driver role for the evening, and duly collected us from the VC and deposited us at the mess bar where we joined the rest of the Snob Hill mob and Turners Tom and then started an impromptu TV and film quiz session. Turners Tom confessed to having had a speaking role in Dangerman, (a little bit before my time), and even all these years later he can still remember his lines which went something like "Dad, he's pinched the truck".

Tuesday saw Makem have a very relaxed day, partaking in some therapy (ironing) before he wandered off to Northeast Bay to do a spot of sunbathing and rock-pooling. The evening was a much quieter affair than Monday night, with the usual suspects turning out for a few quiet relaxants.

Wednesday saw Fifer and Cornish, plus Alec and Brian (comcen) pay a visit to Reflections for elevenses, before Fifer trundled off to the beach for the afternoon. The evening saw some of the Snob Hill mob, accompanied by Donna (comcen) attend the Greek Night at Reflections. Rambling Roger and Makem wandered down to the mess where those attending the Greek night joined us to celebrate Connie's birthday. The night took on a disco theme where RR and Connie partook in some chair dancing, while Chris the Medic again tried to show she is an Essex girl at heart by doing some more Handbag dancing. Connie then came up with an alternative version of this, by throwing Makem's wallet onto the floor and dancing around that. Worst idea of the night was the challenge for RR to get across the mess without touching the floor, this he did very easily, Makem carried him on his back.

Thursday saw Fifer and Tractor Boy take the walk to Crater Cliff and then down to Crystal Bay and back, both of them looked a bit tired when Makem arrived at the mess for tea. Tractor Boy has now decided to only partake in easy walks, mainly due to the fact that the soles have fallen off his walking boots.

Friday saw Rambling Roger, Stan Vesta and Co. setting up the MVC for the Serco Bash. The evening saw Makem, Paddy (yeah, yeah, yeah) and Jean doing a roaring trade in raffle tickets, though after scribing a couple of thousand names on the tickets, they all had rather sore writing arms. Rambling Roger played "mine host" up until the draw was completed, the only glitch being that if only initials are written on the tickets there can be confusion. As it turned out there are two JB's on the island, one from Movements and one from Turners and of course the one who claimed the DVD player was the wrong one. The chef's, Andy and Incendiary Ian, did us all proud with the carvery that was laid on, with everyone complimenting them on the spread. It was quite fitting that Andy won the star prize, more so as his own TV had died that morning. Fifer summed it up late in the evening when he said it was the best party he had been to while he has been here. The only down point (or should that be pour) on the night was the weather, with several heavier than usual showers. The term "drenched" springs to mind for those silly or unlucky enough to be standing outside.

Saturday morning saw a rather strange sight up at Incendiary Ian's basha, his clothes, including his underwear, being neatly folded and laid on the chair outside. Ian claimed later that this was a one off event, but Steve Woolley refuted this suggestion at lunch, stating that II does this all the time when he has had one too many. The morning also saw the big clean-up begin, Glyn, Jean, Kurt and Stan were there bright and early, with Rambling Roger, Makem and Andy (henceforth to be known in this tome as Casey Jones), strolling down a short while later. Two hours of sweat and toil saw the MVC returned to its normal state. The afternoon saw RR and Makem transport the left over drink to storage, with RR then joining the band practice in Sea Breezes. Tractor Boy and Cornish paid a visit to the airhead during the evening to meet the ex chief mettie from the Falklands, Colin, who was on his way North.

Sunday saw the weekly Grogs walk, the usual ramblers being accompanied by three extras from the broken Tristar. Tractor Boy gave a whistle stop tour of the island to Colin, before the Snob Hill mob accompanied him to the mess for a few farewell drinks, all this after Stan Vesta, Casey Jones, Rambling Roger and Incendiary Ian had descended on Makem's basha for a few cold beers.
