ASCENSION ISLAND SPORTS DAY 1998

Sunday 30th August saw a good turn out at Long Beach for the Ascension Island Sports Day. Pictured are Priya Sukhtanker with her pace setter, Paddy, winning the Women's 1500m and Timmy Reynolds soaring to victory in the Men's Long Jump. Congratulations to Priya and Timmy for winning the Best Female and Best Male Athletes respectively.

It's Sunday, it's noon, the Island has gathered at Long Beach in a state of feverish anticipation and ....................... nothing's happening ! True to Ascension form the event finally started about an hour late and from then on continued smoothly to the prize-giving ceremony. Although the number of competitors was small, the competition was still fierce and a couple of new records were set. As usual the tug of war provided the most entertainment and crowd participation. Funny how many experts there are once the event is under way. Thanks to the organising committee (Mick Evans, David Joshua, Bill Cooper. and Ed Rocha for an excellent competition and to HH Roger Huxley for handing out the medals.
