IMPORTATION OF PETROL DRIVEN CARS
Under the Customs (Import Control) Regulations 2012 permission from the Administrator is now required for the importation of petrol cars and other machinery. The aim is to reduce their importation to zero or near zero well ahead of the phase out of petrol supplies on Ascension Island – currently scheduled for 2020.
Since the introduction of the scheme, I have approved a handful of permits as part of a transition arrangement to ensure that those individuals who had legitimately entered into a commitment to ship or purchase vehicles could complete their transactions. But, a steady stream of applications continues to be received at my office.
I would like to make it clear that all future vehicle imports should be diesel powered. No further permits will be granted for petrol driven cars unless in very exceptional, operational circumstances. I urge everyone thinking of importing a car to bear this in mind.
