Ascension : From The Editor - Kitty

Dear Readers, What has been happening in our little metropolis since the last time I was here in the Ed’s chair!

What has been happening in our little metropolis since the last time I was here in the Ed’s chair!

Well – the days have certainly become shorter.

It feels really strange getting out of bed in the dark every morning!

The fry is back!  Yes - after over a year’s absence, it is good to see the birds hovering over the sea near the beaches.  This is certainly welcomed by those who love to fish, as the birds indicate the presence of fry fish which ultimately means that the yellow tails are close behind.  After a spell of slow catches we can hopefully start looking forward to lots of fish.  Who knows we might get a few records broken at the Noddy Lawrence Fishing Competition in June!

We await with bated breath the arrival of the cruise ship MV “Athena” which arrives next Wednesday.  Hopefully sea conditions will be calm allowing the passengers and crew to come ashore.  You will have noticed that we have had an influx of visits from yachts recently and this arrival from the MV Athena is even more evidence that vessels are avoiding passing through the Suez Canal, due to the increase of pirate attacks there.  Ironically it was the construction of the Suez Canal in 1869 which resulted in a decrease of ships calling at St Helena and Ascension.

Excitement levels are rising with the impending FA Cup Final.  Even if you are not particularly partial to either team – it will be easy to get caught up in the excitement on Saturday.  I think that there is no doubt that it will be best enjoyed at any of the clubs where you can watch it amongst friends & supporters and (friendly) rivals…

Also on Saturday will be the anniversary of Napoleon Bonaparte’s demise whilst in exile on St Helena.  At the age of 51 years after 6 years of being kept captive on the Island, Napoleon passed away on 5th May 1821.

Many thanks to Sara for designing the front page for me this week!

Enjoy the week and have a great weekend!
