Ascension : From The Editors (Kitty)
Submitted by The Islander (Islander Editors) 09.02.2012 (Article Archived on 23.02.2012)

Hello Readers, Time is certainly flying … we are now well into February, the month of pancake flipping and romance!

Seems the chance of meeting a prince for Valentine’s slipped through our fingers – yes Prince William transited Ascension on Thursday to commence his 6-week deployment as a sea and rescue pilot on the Falklands.

It is with great sadness that we learnt of the death of Sketch a true gentleman with a genuinely infectious smile!  Sketch sadly lost his battle with cancer on Friday – he will live forever in the hearts and memories of those who knew him! May he rest in peace.

Monday, 6th February was another day in our history books with the Queen reaching her 60th year on the throne – her Diamond Jubilee!  Exciting times ahead when everyone will be celebrating the Diamond Jubilee during an extended weekend from 2nd – 5th June.  It is fervently hoped that everyone on Ascension will make it one of the most spectacular and memorable celebrations on Ascension to date!  Lots and lots of planning ahead but everyone still has lots of time to order those flamboyant and colourful costumes for the street carnival!

Exciting times ahead too for the RMS. Yes - plans are well in hand for an additional 32 berths to be installed on the RMS St Helena whilst she is in dry dock between 5th and 29th July.  She will be able to carry 160 passengers instead of her current capacity of 128. This is certainly good news and the frustration and disappointment at being unable to get to St Helena for Christmas should be a thing of the past!

This week we bid farewell to Sue and Neil McFall and Angela Cranfield and Brian Bennett who will leaving Ascension for the UK. We wish you all the very best for the future.

Finally, I would like to wish you all a very (albeit premature!) Happy Valentines Day!

Whatever you have planned - have a great week!

Kitty
