Ascension : Chair of Two Boats School Governors Committee
Submitted by The Islander (Ascension Island Government) 02.02.2012 (Article Archived on 16.02.2012)

I have received, with sadness, the resignation of Mr Howard Peters as Chairman of the School Governors Committee (SGC).

ASCENSION ISLAND GOVERNMENT

NOTICE FROM THE ADMINISTRATOR

Chair of Two Boats School Governors Committee

I have received, with sadness, the resignation of Mr Howard Peters as Chairman of the School Governors Committee (SGC). Howard will be leaving Ascension Island shortly for a new challenge in Cyprus and I wish him and his family well.

Are you interested in succeeding Howard as Chairman of the School Governors Committee? It is an important role, but not necessarily onerous. It would give you a great opportunity to help the Head Teacher, other teachers and the Ascension Island Government deliver a quality and affordable education service to the Island’s school aged children.

The role of the School Governors Committee is to advise the Administrator, Director of Resources and, of course, the Head Teacher, on education policy and represent the views of the community. The role is a voluntary one and involves

·         Chairing meetings of the SGC once or, sometimes, twice a term.

·         Attending school events to represent the SGC

The skills and experience required to be Chair include:

·         An ability to chair meetings

·         Confidence in delivering advice and  guidance on education  policy matters

·         The ability to consider and represent the views of a wide range of people and to be a good listener

·         Represent the SGC at school events

If you are interested in being considered for the role, please write to me before 3 February, setting out why you would like to undertake the role, along with the qualities you think you would bring to it. E-mails can be addressed to colin.wells@ascension.gov.ac. Letters can be delivered to the AIG Building in Georgetown.

I intend to announce an appointment during February.
