The Hashers assembled at the Babcock generator hut on the North East Bay road, Moaning Angel had advertised this as an OAP friendly hash. When setting the hash her mother (Boomerang Babe) had refused to go up any slopes and kept taking the short cut. We thought we were in for an easy time but Moaning Angel had added an extra loop on the end to keep those without a pension fit. Three circle checks and only prickly bits as hazards.
Scattered hash led the hares along the pipeline into the valley, the warnings of no slopes were soon forgotten when the hounds found themselves climbing scree banks, poor Fay hadn't brought her stick - thinking this was a simple affair.
Sniffy had a panic moment when he found himself walking alongside the knitting circle contributing opinions on waste barrels and dumped rubbish. As realisation struck, he took off up the klinker and was soon no more than a dot in the distance.
After the circle check, the hares found themselves in then along the edge of the gorge. The runners had taken off and crossed the road stretching their limbs on the extra loop. The knitters meanwhile, started collecting wood ready for the boot burning on Moaning Angel's patio.
Once the hashers reassembled up the hill, relief was expressed in finding the chilled kegs of beer, BBQ lit and circle of friendship drawn. Fay has hashed here on Ascension and regularly joins the Saint Helenan hashers - nameless!! She didn't know the naming culture involved iced water but it may be a tradition to introduce to sister hashers in the near future. Due to her Welsh origin, Fay is now known as ' Stickless Dragon', nothing in reference to her career at all.
Next was the ceremonial boot burning, well worn running shoes for Moaning Angel and rather newer sandals for Boomerang Babe! The wind direction was kind, leaving the green soup, bolognaise and mince pies smoke free.
This was only Moaning Angel's second hash set, after her first there were tears and threats of island desertion if she ever set another! This was much more hare and definitely OAP friendly as promised! Thanks to Moaning Angel for all the support she has given to the hash over the last couple of years, its been great knowing you (and your mum). On-on!
Next week: One Boat 4.30pm. Hare: Old Golly Waddler.
Bring a plate of eats. Thank You.
