Ascension : Elections On Ascension Island Submitted by The Islander (Ascension Island Government) 28.10.2010 (Article Archived on 11.11.2010)
Yesterday, 19th October, was the closing date for nominations for election to the Ascension Island Council.
Yesterday, 19th October, was the closing date for nominations for election to the Ascension Island Council. The minimum number of nominations required for a Council of five is six.
Unfortunately, although six nominations were received, two of them were submitted after time and are therefore invalid. No election can take place on the basis of only four nominations.
In these circumstances, the law provides that the Island Council is suspended and that the Governor must arrange for a fresh election within six months.
I am therefore consulting with officials as to what is the best way forward for Ascension Island. I do not wish to act in undue haste, nor do I wish to preside over a return to governing the island without the advice of a democratically elected Council. I am also keen to maintain the enthusiasm and commitment of the six who were prepared to stand.
I will issue another statement as soon as my consultations lead to an appropriate course of action that I believe to be in the best interests of the island.
Andrew Gurr
Governor
