Tail of humpback seen in the distance
Little is known about humpback whales around Ascension Island. A few individuals are seen here in late winter and early spring.
Humpback whales may come to Ascension Island from as far as the Falklands or Antarctica to give birth to their calves and mate. Individual animals can be identified by the black and white pattern on the underside of their tail (which is raised out of the water as animals dive). This pattern is unique to each animal and allows the migration of individuals to be followed by matching photographs of animals taken in different places. Dolphins are also seen around the island.
First Aid Training
By Natasha Williams
First Aid training took place at the beginning of last week at the Babcock Atlantic Relay Station. A one day course was held for AIG and Babcock staff, which was delivered by Mr Peter Pocock, a First Aid trainer.

Peter demonstrating what to do in a choking situation
We were given a very informative presentation which included an overview of First Aid and what to expect being a first aider. We participated in some training exercises with CPR, recovery positions and choking situations. I gave a short presentation to the Conservation staff at our weekly meeting about the important lessons learnt from the First Aid training. The information booklet was also passed round and will be available for all staff to read at our office.
Thank you to Babcock for organizing the training and to Peter, it was a very enjoyable and interesting course.
