Ascension : Flipper Trophy Knockout Tournament – 2010 (Week 2)
Submitted by The Islander (Islander Editors) 09.09.2010 (Article Archived on 23.09.2010)

This Sunday both semi-finals of the 9th Flipper Trophy Knockout Tournament were played.

The Tournament is run by C&W employees as a dedication to the memory of their work colleague Andrew “Flipper” Bennett and before the start of each game the players and officials stood around the centre circle to observe a minute’s silence in memory of Andrew.

Phillip Yon scores twice to take Milan into next week’s final

VC Milan 2 – Dream Team 1

Man of the Match – PhillipYon.

The action began with a VC corner that Jermaine O’Connor connected with, hitting his shot just beyond the near post.  VC’s second corner came from the far side of the pitch but was cleared by the Dream Team’s first defender, Jason Augustus,

In between these two corners “Ali Stu” (who made the match reporter’s job easier by wearing bright orange socks) ran twice through midfield but failed to get a shot off towards the VC’s goal.  Colin Duncan took the first shot for the Dream Team but it was just too high.  The next two chances for the Dream Team fell to Darren Reynolds who fired directly at the VC’s Keeper, Errol Thomas, and to Timmy Thomas whose effort almost hit the corner flag!  Ian Gough had a shot on the turn for the Dream Team before Ashley “Dutch” tried to reply for the VC but skied his shot.  David “Skipper” then had to block a shot from the VC’s no. 10.

At the other end Daren Reynolds passed to Kruff who could only direct the ball into Errol’s hands.  Colin then took a Dream free kick from his own half (Dream being the team name, the free kick wasn’t that good!)  Kruff got on the end of it but his shot was parried by Errol; the ball rebounded out to “Ali Stu” whose shot hit the underside of the bar and bounced out of the goal.

Geordie Peters began the second half with a shot that went wide of the Dream Team’s goal, while at the other end Andrew “BBC” Ellick crossed for Colin Duncan but Errol collected the ball before Colin could reach it.  VC’s Shane Thomas then charged into the Dreamers’ goal but hit his shot wide at the last moment.  However VC Milan were not to be denied their goal; Phillip Yon took a long range shot which everyone, including the Dreamers’ Keeper, stopped to watch as the ball seemed to slip through David “Skipper”s hands.  VC’s pressure continued as Shane Thomas reached the ball ahead of “Skipper”, but his shot was wide.

Martin Andrews then took a free kick for the Dream Team from just outside the box; his chip went beyond the wall but Errol got behind the ball to prevent an equaliser.

Phillip Yon’s (and the VC’s) second goal came with the assistance of “Skipper” who could only scoop Phillip’s shot over his own shoulder and into the Dream Team’s net.

The game’s exciting finale was set up by Denny Stroud awarding the Dream Team a penalty when it looked as though their attacker had fallen over unchallenged; Denny obviously had a better view of the incident than me!  Martin Andrews drilled the spot-kick into the bottom left corner of the VC goal as Errol dived the wrong way.

The Dream Team searched for an equaliser; the VC defence scrambled a corner clear before “BBC” went on a run on the right and passed the ball across the VC’s goal mouth just inches above Kruff’s head.

As the game ended; the VC returned to the attack with Freddie Crowie being kind enough to keep them all on-side!  Shane Thomas was unmarked in the area but his timid shot was easily collected by David.  Jason Augustus fired in a corner for Brent Williams to head over the bar and Shane burst through some dreaming defenders but David used his legs to block his shot.

Holders return to the final

Retards 2 – Wanderers 0

Man of the Match – Dane Wade.

Leroy Hudson sent the first chance of the game wide of the Wanderers’ goal but Yanick kept the pressure up forcing the Wanderers’ Keeper, Denny Stroud, to block his shot.  At the other end Neil “Dickerboy” Lawrence just failed to connect with the Wanderers first corner.

The Retards’ Denny Leo followed a shot with a cross to Dane Wade who hit the ball wide.  Dane was soon on target scoring the Retards’ first goal when he trapped the ball and hit it into the corner of the goal leaving Denny no chance.  Jeremy Constantine and Schmichael both had further chances for the Retards and Eugene Bennett almost set up another chance for Dane Wade but his pass was slightly too long.

After a period of Wanderers pressure “Chocolate” managed to get his old, aching legs into the Retards penalty area only to fire his shot wide of Paul “Kelly” Thomas’ goal.

Carlin Yon had his shot tipped around the post by Denny and Jeremy Constantine was presented with a tap-in from the corner and duly obliged to double the Retards lead.

As the second half dragged on; (the Ref. must have borrowed Alex Ferguson’s watch),

Berard Dupres was substituted late in the game as he had run out of power!

My “gin & tonic” man of the match was Adrian “Kenny” Henry (for a fairly obvious reason!)

So this coming weekend VC Milan will play the Retards in the tournament’s final.

Geoff.
