Green Mountain National Park Management Plan.

In April 2004, the Ascension Island Government received funding from the Overseas Territories Environment Programme (OTEP) for a project entitled: Developing and initiating the implementation of Ascension’s first National Park Management Plan. During this project a lot of hard work went into developing and implementing the Management Plan. Paths were improved, greenhouses were covered to create nurseries for the propagation of endemic plants, areas cleared and fenced where these endemics have been reintroduced into the wild.

The objectives within the Management Plan are to ensure the protection of flora and fauna and their environments so that they can be enjoyed, both now and in the future, by inhabitants and visitors to Ascension.

One of the activities completed during the project was the construction of the board walk to the Dew Pond. The board walk enabled the path to become more accessible to all visitors to the Green Mountain National Park. Before the board walk was built the path had become very muddy and slippy, unsafe for visitors to walk on. There was also a serious soil erosion issue. A deep trench had been created as a result of the regular foot traffic. The board walk protects the underlying ground. During the last 5 years the bamboo roots have grown underneath, right across the path, helping to make the soil a lot more stable.
