Ascension : Public Notice
Submitted by The Islander (Ascension Island Government) 18.06.2009 (Article Archived on 02.07.2009)

The text of a letter dated 27 May 2009 from Gillian Merron MP to members of the Island Council seeks the latter’s views on the draft new Constitution

PUBLIC NOTICE

The text of a letter dated 27 May 2009 from Gillian Merron MP to members of the Island Council seeks the latter’s views on the draft new Constitution for Ascension (and St Helena and Tristan da Cunha) by 24 June, with a view to putting the Constitution Order to the Privy Council in early July.

The Island Council has dedicated a lot of time to considering the draft document, contributed a number of suggestions and secured a number of improvements over the earlier texts. And there have been a number of public and workplace meetings to allow everyone to put forward any concerns and views they might have had. Council will be meeting within the next week or so to consider its response to the letter. In the meantime any member of the public who has any views or concerns may get in touch with any of the Councillors. Copies of the final draft Constitution are available from Sandra Benjamin in the AIG Administration Office (tel no 7000 ext 131; email: Sandra.Benjamin@ascension.gov.ac).

Gillian Merron MP has moved to a different post following the recent reshuffle and the new minister with responsibility for the Overseas Territories is Chris Bryant MP. Council’s letter will therefore be addressed to him.
