Marvel of Peru, Four o’ clock

Mirabilis jalapa is native to tropical America. This bushy perennial herb has tuberous roots and is known as ‘Four o’clock’ because its fragrant flowers open in late afternoon, remain open all night and close again at dawn. The flowers are trumpet-shaped with five lobes and maybe yellow, bright pink or, occasionally, white. The leaves are pointed and heart-shaped. The plant is widespread on the upper Ramps.
