Ascension : THINKING DAY 2009 ON ASCENSION ISLAND Submitted by The Islander (Cheryl Anthony) 19.03.2009 (Article Archived on 02.04.2009)
When one hears the word “Thinking Day”, it is assumed that the 1st Ascension Girlguiding Units go to “Think” for the day!!!!
This is not the meaning. What we actually do is celebrate Thinking Day on 22nd February as it’s the joint birthday of Lord and Lady Baden-Powell the Founder of Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, later became Girl Guides in 1910. Guides all over the World think about each other with love and friendship. Everywhere Guides hold special meetings and every Guide contributes money that go into World Fund which is used to help Guides who need it.
Each year there’s a theme and this year was “HIV/AIDS/MALARIA”. Our venue was the Georgetown Cinema in which all Guides, Brownies and Rainbow girls, Leaders and Asst. Commissioner attended. The afternoon commenced with the girls listening to Shari Parkhill (Brownie Leader) enlightening them on these diseases, how one can come into contact with it, how one feels having it or the way a person reacts when they learn about someone who has it and so on. The girls listened with great enthusiasm.
Activities took place and the final one was 3 girls having paper placed in their hands and everyone goes about shaking hands. All those who came in contact with the paper had to sit down. This saw if
they remembered anything Shari had said so a question was asked if all those who touched the paper caught the disease, and they answered “No, because it can only be caught, sexually, by fluid, blood transfusion or even a mosquito bite”. So yes they did listened.
We then enjoyed our little banquet and concluded with our ceremony. Mrs. Linda Yon, Asst. Commissioner-to-be opened the ceremony with a little description on Thinking Day, then we sang One more Step Along The World I Go. The Guides then continued with the description of their “World Badge” what every little detail represents. With their shiny copper coins and subs all girls placed them on the world map in places they think one most likely would need it. A prayer by Young Leader Shalane was read, Kum Ba Yah was sang and then Linda was enrolled to become our official Asst. Commissioner, followed by a prayer on all those who has these diseases. Each Unit sang their TAPS and then it was time to clean up and head off home.
RED NOSE DAY AT GIRL GUIDES
Friday 13th March, the Girl Guides celebrated Red Nose Day as a Big Hair/Make-Up meeting. All the girls did each other to have the weirdest hairstyle and make-up. Some wanted to look glamorous but brush in hand I took my turn in “teasing” the hair like a lion’s mane or something from a horror film!!!!! We had an enjoyable evening and took photos and stayed like this through-out our meeting. We decided that our subscription from this meeting, a donation from a friend (because I was wearing my nose at work in my hair coz it kept slipping of my nose when I spoke!!!), and something from our fundraising will go towards Comic Relief in the UK. I know we are desperate in fundraising for our Unit but I believe that “The More You Give, The More You Will Receive”!!!!
