Last week the Conservation Department had visitor Dr Nikki Chapman, who works for Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC), she has recently been appointed the Overseas Territories fund raising officer for the JNCC’s Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies Programme. This post is funded by the Department of International Development (DFID). It is contracted for a year, and the main duty of this post will be to explore all funding sources available for nature conservation work in the UKOTs, also to seek new streams of funding. The second component of this role, is to work with UKOTs to submit funding applications where needed. Nikki’s job is one way to help actively seek the required resources to help ensure conservation biodiversity in the UKOTs.

‘Nikki has worked in JNCC as the Marine Ecologist, and earlier this year also took on the role of the JNCC Overseas Territories and Crown Dependencies marine focal point. As a benthic ecologist specialising in invertebrates and biogenic reefs, Nikki has substantial experience of initiating and supporting both temperate mainland and remote island based conservation projects. These projects have spanned across Belize, Philippines, Galapagos (Darwin Initiative) and Bermuda and will have given her an insight into the challenges that lie ahead.’ (This piece of information was used from the JNCC Paper)

We would like to welcome Keith Leo back to island. Keith is here working under the Invasive Species Project, as a Conservation Fieldworker and who will be working with both the Enviromental Health Department and Conservation. Keith has been here before working with the Gardens’ Section for Ascension Island Government.

Conservation Centre will be closed for the holidays Thursday 25th December – 28th December and will open again as normal on the Monday 29th December.

Conservation Centre also will be closed on 1st January 2009, and will open as normal on the 2nd January 2009. We would like to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
