Ascension : Heritage Notes
Submitted by The Islander (Islander Internet Editor) 23.10.2008 (Article Archived on 06.11.2008)

Our new volunteers are certainly stepping up to the plate, and have all volunteered to help out on Saturday mornings As well, some have already volunteered their time, talents and skills to take on some of the projects that have been on the back burner for a while.

With their enthusiasm, we are looking forward to accomplishing a great deal.

We have a beautiful new display cabinet in our foyer, thanks to CSR and the superb carpentry skills of Melvin Moyce.  It complements our publications and merchandise and makes it easier for the public to see what is offered for sale by the Heritage Society.  Many thanks to Melvin for his time and efforts.

The store room in the gallery building will be turned into an office to stream line this aspect of the operation.  While clearing it out on the weekend, we found a number of treasures, which of course, led us to planning ways to exhibit these finds!  Pete and Jill Johnson, who are arriving in early November to organize and catalogue our archives, certainly have a big job ahead of them.  We are very appreciative that they are volunteering their time to this endeavour.

The store room was then painted and construction on the work counters and shelving will begin this week.  We hope to have everything organized in the office before the Johnsons arrive so that they can get started on their archive work without hindrance.  Right now the office materials are stored in various places.

Despite the chaos, the museum is open for visitors.  Please come along and have a look at the newer exhibits, and give us any ideas you have for improvement.  We are planning a special temporary exhibit in the near future, and then a number of revamped permanent exhibits to take its place.  These include photographic exhibitions of the founding of the museum, life on Ascension and a revamped Children’s Corner. Watch this column for more news on these!!

Again, thanks to all the volunteers who have spent countless hours packing, moving, stripping floors, painting, rearranging and manning the museum in the past few months.  With your help, we are moving forward and finding ways to protect and expand our collections and displays.
