The Ascension Island Heritage Society is going to begin a revitalization of Fort Thornton in the near future.
The Ascension Island Heritage Society is going to begin a revitalization of Fort Thornton in the near future. The first phase will consist of cleaning up the site. Then, some painting, renovation and construction of safety barricades will be undertaken.
Help from the general public would be greatly appreciated. The work will take place mostly on Saturday mornings and a call for volunteers will be going out in the Islander. Volunteers contributed greatly to the project undertaken last year in clearing the Hydroponics site of the invasive species. We are hoping this project will be equally successful! If any individuals or groups have other times that they would like to donate to this project, alternate arrangements can be made!
Fort Thornton is another of Ascension Island’s valuable and unique heritage sites. We know that this project will result in a greater awareness and appreciation of this site. If anyone has any ideas for this site, or any other heritage site on the island, please pass them on to the Heritage Society. We are always looking for ways to preserve the past for future generations.
As well, the Heritage Society is continuing its efforts to identify World War II U.S. Army sites. We plan to erect signs at various sites, explaining what they were during the war years. The island is covered with heritage sites of all kinds. Please take care when visiting these sites. They are a link from the past to the future. We need to preserve them.
As you wander around the island, look closely. Who knows what you’ll discover!!!
