Ascension : Police Activity Report
Submitted by The Islander (Police Ascension) 26.06.2008 (Article Archived on 10.07.2008)

We are still continuing to receive reports from the Public regarding loud music, which is either being played from vehicles, entering residential or other premises.

We are still continuing to receive reports from the Public regarding loud music, which is either being played from vehicles, entering residential or other premises. There are also occasions when a report of this nature is received, when people are leaving the clubs in, either Georgetown or Two Boats and the noise is loud, and of and annoyance to other residents who are either sleeping or on shift. The Honking of horns during the night time in and around residential areas are getting out of hand as well, and the same applies to unnecessary honking in the residential areas during the day time as people are on shift and ARE ASLEEP. Cars are playing loud music coming into Georgetown and the Two Boats areas in the daylight hours and are honking their horns unnecessarily. Horns are for the use of avoiding an accident.

I would like to inform the public once again, that in order to combat the problem of loud music at the Pier Head a NO LOUD MUSIC sign was erected. Other pro-active measures were put in place as well, such as High Visibility Policing on foot patrols in and around the problem areas, and on hearing loud noise and, music being played from these vehicles, they were stopped and the driver’s were advised before entering the residential area of Georgetown, to turn the music down.  All of these measures have proven to be successful and we will continue to show high visibility. FOR THE DAY TIME DRIVERS.  Those of you, who are responsible for playing loud music whilst driving through the residential areas of GEORGETOWN AND TWO BOATS, please refrain from doing this and have consideration for other persons who may be on shift and are asleep in the day light hours.

To clarify the matter regarding loud noise/music here are a few pointers:

When loud noise or music is being played at a volume, to which the public finds annoying.  The Police will respond and the appropriate action will be taken.

The following Law applies to Loud Music being played from a Public Place and vehicles:

h)   Uses, in any public place to the annoyance of the public, any loud speaker, megaphone or other device or instrument for magnifying sound;

Plays any musical instrument, radio or sound reproducer in any public road or street to such a volume as to be an annoyance to the public;

SPEEDING.

                    I would also like to point out that there have been complaints of vehicles speeding in the 20 MPH zones in Georgetown and Two Boats. There are other persons using these roads as well, and sometimes children are playing on their bicycles, therefore consideration should be given.  Please do not ignore the road traffic signs as you are committing a road traffic offence.

Just to let the Public be aware, that the Ascension Island Police Detatachment has had legislation passed to put in use the New Lion Intoxilyzer 8000 and the Laser Speed Meter SL700. Hopefully the Laser Speed Meter SL700 can now be used when the Police are carrying out speed checks. The Lion Intoxilyzer can now be used when a driver of that said vehicle has consumed, to much alcohol and is under the influence.

Have a nice week and drive with care

P, C. Bryan Constantine.
