Ascension : News From St Mary's Church
Submitted by The Islander (Clive & Jenny Duncan) 31.01.2008 (Article Archived on 14.02.2008)

For me fishing is not an easy way to earn a living. Several years ago two friends of mine talked me into going deep water fishing but was something I could never do on a regular basis.

However, I did enjoy the occasional day’s outing and experienced the difficulties they faced when they had a  poor catch

When Jesus called Peter and his brother Andrew to follow him they were making a cast in the lake with their net . The other two brothers, James and John, were mending their nets when they were also called.  The interesting point here is that they were not men of great scholarship, wealth or social back ground.  They were not poor but working

folk.  It is also interesting how they responded to Jesus’ call, they left everything to follow Him.  ‘Follow me and I will make you fishers of men’.

Jesus is still calling people today to come and follow him and to serve him in the same way that he called the four fishermen as he was walking by the Sea of Galilee..

Have a pleasant week.

Canon Clive.
