Week 17, January 28th

Geography Coursework

Year 11 will be carrying out their Geography coursework this term.  They have chosen ‘The Beaches’ as the theme for their enquiries.  As a part of the data collection process they will need to gather the opinions of the Island’s residents through the use of questionnaires.

If and when you get a questionnaire could you please complete it as soon as possible and return it to the student concerned.  The students will not be able to move on to the second part of their task without your completed questionnaires.  They have deadlines to work to and your cooperation in this will be very much appreciated.

Reception & Years 1 / 2

Draw a picture of your favourite creature on Ascension Island, and write a sentence to tell us why you like it. It could be a donkey, a turtle, a land crab, a mouse, a canary, or your pet. It might be something different – you can choose.

Years 3 & 4

Imagine you are a turtle swimming to Ascension Island. Write an account of your journey, telling us how it feels to swim from South America to a tiny island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

Years 5 & 6

Find out 10 facts about the turtles that come to Ascension Island, and record them in the form of a report for a newspaper.

This term we are keeping the score of which house has won the most house points from the challenges. So far the scores for this term for the houses are:

Do you have any books we can borrow?

Do you have a copy of Northern Lights by Philip Pullman, or the Hobbit by Tolkein? If so, please could we borrow it for half a term, as we would like to use them for group reading, but unfortunately do not have enough copies. Thank you.

If you have half an hour or an hour to spare on Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays and are interested in hearing year 1 and 2 children read please contact Mrs Augustus at school.  Reading takes place between 1:15 and 2:45pm.

Year 11 Reports

The year 11 mocks were spread over two weeks so that the students only had two instead of three exams in any one day.  This means that there will be a delay in the year 11 reports going home to Parents.  They will now be given out a week later than planned on 13^th February.

Secondary Sector Parents Evening

This will take place on Tuesday 5^th February and we look forward to seeing all secondary parents at this meeting so that we can discuss the progress their children are making.  Year 11 Mock results will be available to parents at this meeting.

Nursery

The children are showing a lot of interest in writing their names and those of their friends.  We will be sending home more information so that you can help your child in the same way as we do in school.

Digits that add to 5: 05, 14, 23, 32, 41, 50

50-5=45    41-14=27    32-23=9

Category C

All multiples of 5 end in 0 or 5, so to have a remainder of 1 when a number is divided by 5, the number must end in 1 or 6. The number we are looking for must therefore end in 1 or 6.

All multiples of 2 are even numbers (end in 0,2,4,6 or 8), so to have a remainder of 1 when a number is divided by 2, the number cannot be even. We can therefore eliminate numbers ending in 6 (as determined above).

The number we are looking for must end in 1

To get a multiple of 7 that ends in 1, it must be multiplied by a number that ends in 3:

7          x          3          =          21

7          x          23         =          161      

7          x          33         =          231

7          x          43         =          301

7          x          63         =          441      

Using trial and improvement, it can be seen 301 satisfies all the conditions.
