Why does St Helena need to have a Census
A population Census is a major survey that is conducted in almost every country in the world, every ten years or so. St Helena needs a Census to obtain accurate information about the people of the Island of St Helena and their living conditions. The information from the Census is used on St Helena to help plan policy in a wide number of social and economic areas and to assist in planning for the development of St Helena. The Census is therefore important for everyone. By answering the questions, each of us makes an important contribution to the future of St Helena.
Is it a legal requirement to complete the Census Schedules
In accordance with the Census Ordinance 1986, which applies to Ascension by Ordinance A1 of 1987, you are required to complete the Census Schedules fully and truthfully. Persons wilfully refusing or without lawful excuse failing to complete the Schedule shall be liable on summary conviction to a fine of up to £100, or to an imprisonment not exceeding three months or both.
Will the information I provide be kept confidential
YES! Under the Census Ordinance 1986, all staff involved in the Census have to sign a declaration that they will observe confidentiality with regard to the information collected and there are heavy penalties if they fail to do so – on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding £500 or to imprisonment not exceeding one year or both.
