CHOOSING A NAME

When parents are faced with choosing a name for their child it is not unusual for them to choose a family name to keep the name alive.  I am pleased that two of our grand children are carrying the name of two of their grandparents.

When the angel appeared to Joseph he was told that his wife was to have a son and his name must be called Jesus.  Unfortunately for Joseph it was not a family name he  must have wondered why JESUS and not Joseph   was chosen to keep the family name alive.

In St. Mathew’s Gospel we read about the birth of Jesus  including Joseph’s dream and  the angel who appeared to him.  The angel told Joseph to take Mary home with him to be his wife.. She will bear him a son and you shall give him the name of Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins. All this happened in order to fulfil what the Lord declared through the prophet.  A virgin will conceive  and bear a son and he shall be called Emmanuel, a name which means ‘God with us’.

Once again we are about to celebrate the birth of Jesus .  Let us not miss this opportunity of joining our fellow brothers and sisters this Christmas  in giving thanks to God for his greatest gift to us  in his son Jesus Christ..  May he be the centre of our celebrations.

Jenny joins me in wishing you all a blessed and joyous Christmas.

With love and prayers,.

Canon Clive.
