Ascension : News from St Mary's Church
Submitted by The Islander (Clive & Jenny Duncan) 29.11.2007 (Article Archived on 13.12.2007)

Dear All, Just after arriving on Ascension I was talking with some members of St. Mary’s congregation when the subject of St. Mary’s Vicarage was brought up. Checking through some of the Church records recently I came across this entry in one of the Registers :-

Sunday 11 September 1966, 11.45 am.  The laying of the foundation stone of the new vicarage by His Excellency the Governor, Sir John Field, CMG., in the presence if the Ascension Island Administrator,  Lay Reader G.N. Bagley and the Archdeacon of St. Helena, L.A. Smith”.

No doubt a number of us will remember Sir John Field as well as the Archdeacon back on St. Helena. I wonder if there are still people here on the Island who can remember this event or anyone who was involved with the construction work.

Due to the fact that I will be unable to celebrate Mass this coming Sunday I am pleased that our two Lay Ministers will be conducting the service at 10.30 am.

Sunday 9 December will be a Family Service again this will be conducted by Lay Minister Clarence Roberts.

Have a pleasant week.

Canon Clive
