Submitted by The Islander (Conservation Office) 18.10.2007 (Article Archived on 01.11.2007)

Volunteers, including the Brownies and Scouts help at the Annual Beach Cleanup

Volunteers at the Annual Beach

 Cleanup

Conservation Weekly.

The Conservation Department extends its utmost thanks to all of the volunteers who helped with Sunday’s Island Beach Cleanup.  This annual event, undertaken in cooperation with personnel from the USAF and RAF bases, comprised a sweep of each of the main beaches to remove any litter or encroaching vegetation. A special thank you   goes out to Peter Edwards, Frances Dixon and Pete Ellis for their help with the event.

Volunteers at English Bay noted that there were considerable amounts of cigarette butts and nails on that beach. Please do not leave your cigarette butts on the beach and when using the BBQ do not dump the ashes onto the sand. Another area that continues to need work is Deadman’s Beach, where some areas still need some weeding to remove the Mexican poppy (the thistle-like plant). If you are interested in helping out, please call in or contact the Conservation Dept., x6359 for further details.
