Ascension : Nostalgic Reasoning - Aleksandar (Alex) Gradinski
Submitted by The Islander (Gavin Yon) 23.08.2007 (Article Archived on 06.09.2007)

Although this is a beautifully isolated, in its entire forms uncommon island, it can produce a heavy toll on the spirit.

Although this is a beautifully isolated, in its entire forms uncommon island, it can produce a heavy toll on the spirit.

The amazingly preserved lava flows induce an intoxicating affect akin to that of anxiety in lonely bliss. Walking through the nesting grounds of the sooty terns is like exiting the human world and entering a kingdom of birds. And leaving the desert outskirts for the tropical summit is an experience unmatched. That is of course to say nothing of the wonderful marine life.

But, then I reminisce about forgotten seasons, and winter frost, devilish heat during the heart of summer, and autumn’s fantasy in moulting leaves. The first days of spring, that aesthetic warmth of rebirth, is but a memory to me now. My teeming, idle spirit yearns for childhood pastures, so I may run through grassy fields in euphoric comfort.

To all my friends I can only say “see you later”, for I will miss Ascension and I will be back to enjoy her caressingly soft embrace.

Aleksandar (Alex) Gradinski
