The Devil and Dampier
Activities with the New Horizons group and Island Explorers continued last week with visits to Devil’s RidingSchool and Dampier’s Drip. Conservation department staff led the New Horizons group to Devil’s RidingSchool where they walked to the letterbox to stamp their booklets and add their name to the others spelled out in rocks. Here the group also learned about the existence of a lake during the Pleistocene and the how Devil’s eyeballs were formed from wet and dry ash.
Later in the week, the Island Explorers walked to Dampier’s Drip to visit the caves and learn about water transportation on the island. Despite the heat, the group was very energetic and well-behaved. Thanks for a great outing and thanks also to the parents and volunteers who accompanied us on the walk. Congratulations to the Wideawakes 2 who were the winning group from the first activity with the sooty terns. Stay tuned next week to learn more about our work with the youth from Ascension and St. Helena…
Reminder: The Conservation Department asks that all fishermen please continue to take extra care when fishing near frigate birds. If you do happen to hook a bird, please do not pull the hook out. Leave the hook in place, clip the line off as close to the wing as possible and report the interaction to our office x6359. We appreciate your cooperation.
