Ascension : AIR ACCESS UPDATE - CONTRACTOR’S CONFIRM ISLAND VISIT
Submitted by The Islander (Gavin Yon) 31.05.2007 (Article Archived on 14.06.2007)

Last month we issued a statement informing you that we had formally invited the four pre-qualified contractors on a site visit to St Helena.

Last month we issued a statement informing you that we had formally invited the four pre-qualified contractors on a site visit to St Helena.  We are pleased to confirm that all of the contractors have accepted this invitation.

Travel arrangements are now being finalised to enable the contractors to leave Walvis Bay on the 10th June, arriving here on 14th June.   The contractors will spend eight days on island and will depart for Walvis Bay on 22nd June 2006.

The contractors will be accompanied by representatives from DFID (including Nigel Kirby, DFID’s Access Project Manager), Atkins and Faber Maunsell, taking the total number of project visitors to more than 20 people.

The visit will enable the contractors to carry out an initial site assessment and evaluate local resources as part of their tender preparations.  It is important that the contractors are made aware of what is available on St Helena, not only in the construction sector, but also in support areas including catering, housing, general supplies, telecommunications, etc.

We have already started meeting with the private sector to offer advice and support in preparation for the visit and will continue to do this up to the time the contractor arrives.
