Ascension : Press Release - Ascension Island Elections Submitted by The Islander (Ascension Island Government) 26.04.2007 (Article Archived on 10.05.2007)
Governor Clancy released the following statement this morning about the Ascension Island Election process: “I am naturally disappointed that by the deadline for nominations of 17th April, there were only two nominees for the Ascension Island Council.
Of course I am very grateful to those two candidates who were prepared to put their names forward.
The Council should comprise seven Elected Members as well as Ex-Officio Members and under the rules for a quorum, it is not feasible to operate with just two Elected Members.
In the circumstances I am urgently reviewing options with the aim of continuing to involve those working and living on Ascension Island in putting views to me on policy issues. There are important issues which need to be considered on Ascension in the coming months including policies on housing and business; a strategic plan; a fisheries report which raises conservation issues; the child protection report and harbour legislation. All these are issues which potentially affect the day to day lives of those living and working on Ascension.”
