Ascension : Council Elections for Ascension a Possible Option
Submitted by The Islander (Juanita Brock) 29.03.2007 (Article Archived on 12.04.2007)

There are two options being considered for Ascension's Government.

PUBLIC NOTICE

Following the resignation of six of the Ascension Island Councillors recently, the Acting Governor of St Helena is considering two options:

    (i)  to hold a by-election to fill the vacant seats or

(ii)  to call a general election.

The Acting Governor's preference is moving towards dissolution of the Ascension Island Council.  This might be more appropriate as it would allow Councillors to be appointed for a full term of three years rather than having by-elections which will mean appointing for eighteen months i.e. the life of the present Council.

The Acting Governor will be issuing a further statement in the next 24 to 48 hours

Nicola Kerslake

Acting Administrator                                                                                     27 March 2007
