The hut on the far firing range was where everyone gathered this week. Lots of craters to pick from! There was a little bit of concern when Uncle Fester didn’t show up on time….

The hut on the far firing range was where everyone gathered this week.  Lots of craters to pick from!  There was a little bit of concern when Uncle Fester didn’t show up on time….after all, he’s the man with the refreshments!!  He finally pulled in to a round of applause, and it was on with the huddle.  After the usual warnings, loose rocks, etc, Wallace added that we would be coming to a really steep bit with loose footing, where we would be given a choice to either proceed or turn back!!

The on-on led up the track and then along a sheep track towards Sisters and Perfect Crater.  Then we started climbing, up to a circle check on the side of Perfect Crater.  This was it, time to make the choice, keep climbing or head back down!  All the hashers, even the new sorry souls, were brave and chose to continue on up.  Of course, it might have been that they really didn’t have any idea what they were in for!  Good thing we had the little gully to crawl up through – there seemed to be a dearth of hash along the route.  Something about one of the hares leaving with the bag of hash??

At the top of the climb, another circle check gave everyone a chance to catch their breath and admire the view.  A couple of the FRBs were obviously ready to go, since they kept slipping a little bit farther along the crater path!  Finally, the last of the slower folks made it to the top and it didn’t take long for the on-on to be sounded.

We only stayed on the crater path for a short while.  Then, of course, a little more excitement had to be added to the route, and off we headed over the back side of the crater.  Part way down we came across another circle check.  At this point Mildew was suffering from a turned ankle which was taped up for a little added comfort.  Then it was more boulder crawling on our way to the bottom of the crater.  There we found a nice sheep path to follow down to the track.  By the time the slower folks made it there, the FRBs were returning from a run along the track towards the main road, where they had run straight into a back arrow!

Buford T passed the middle group and we soon found out why – he was heading off the last of the group and taking them on a shortcut to the other track.  From there it was on to the hut…..except it was the wrong hut.  We realized we still had a long way to go before we had a chance to cool off, and soothe our thirst!

It wasn’t long before we left the easy track to head towards the rocks.  Over the rocks, across the sand, over more rocks, across more sand…..and so on.  Finally it was up a steep little cliff and then on for home!  A weary, thirsty bunch stumbled in to the hut and dug into the coolers.  Soon, lots of goodies also appeared and everyone dug in gratefully.

The circle of friendship was drawn, and Dean was christened and given the moniker Ginger Nuts.  Welcome to the Ascension Hash House Harriers!  Lots of new hashers were along for this week’s hash as well.  Well done, all of you.  They have even  promised to come back next week and bring more along!  Always great to have more people join the group.

Great hash, Wallace and Grommitt.  A nice crater crawl to keep us all in shape!

Next Week:  One Boat CSO Building
Hares:  Fugitive & Uncle Fester
