Ascension : Buried Treasure Discovered
Submitted by The Islander (Gary Robinson) 27.07.2006 (Article Archived on 28.09.2006)

A handmade ceramic Prussian Schnapps bottle believed to be dated mid Eighteenth century has been found off the Pier head, near the harbour moorings.

Scuba diving enthusiasts Peter Ellis (MOD) and Frank Reynolds (IDL) discovered this rare find on Wednesday 12th July 2006. Only the top of the bottle was visible at first, but with some careful excavating they managed to remove the bottle from the sea-bed totally intact.

The bottle has the maker’s stamp mark and name and there also seems to be some fingerprint indents too, making this a very interesting piece. Pete and Frank have kindly donated the bottle to Ascension Island Heritage Museum, where it will be available for all to view.

Our thanks go to Pete and Frank for this very generous donation.
