Ascension : Conversation Weekly
Submitted by The Islander (Gavin Yon) 20.07.2006 (Article Archived on 21.09.2006)

This week we have a message from our visitor from Kew Gardens who is volunteering with us for 3 weeks.

Thank you very much!

I’d just like to say thank you to everyone who has made my brief stay on the island a fantastic experience.

Many of you may have been wondering who the strange looking bearded fella is who’s been driving the conservation landrover. Well, I’m Jim from the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. I’ve spent the last two and a half weeks working with the conservation team, in particular with Stedson Stroud and your island’s endangered endemic plants.

I think the work the whole of the conservation team is putting into the conservation of the island’s flora and fauna is superb and it’s great to see so much support and enthusiasm coming from yourselves.

I’ll be leaving the island this coming Thursday but I don’t think I’ll be putting any paint on that rock of yours because I can’t wait to come back.

Jim Handley.

For further information on this project please contact the Conservation Centre on 6359 or e-mail Tara.Pelembe@ascension.gov.ac or Natasha.Williams@ascension.gov.ac
