Ascension : School Page - Moving On
Submitted by The Islander (Soo Matthews) 29.06.2006 (Article Archived on 13.07.2006)

You will probably have noticed a few new people around town during the day lately.

Yes, Year 11 have now officially completed all of their exams and have formally left school.  School is a little quieter now without them around!  We went to the Obsidian last Tuesday for a farewell meal (and clashed with and England match so conversation was a bit interrupted to say the least!) and some leaving photos.  Thank you to Tavie and Mrs Maggott for organising our night out. On behalf of the students I’d like to say a huge Thank you to all the staff at the school for their consistent and persistent hard work with them.  Some of the students would call it nagging and they may well be right, but I know they will be glad of it all when their results come through in August.

Of the year group one student has applied to join the Army and is awaiting an interview (see below), one has a temporary post covering for someone on leave, four are looking for work and five were successful in their applications for funding for places at Chichester College. The college applicants are now biting their nails to see whether they meet the grades required.  The students who are currently at Chichester are due to return to the island for the summer holidays at the end of this week and have kindly agreed to tell them the truth about life at college.

Thank you also to all those who came to school during the exams period to either invigilate or act as readers for the students.  Especial thanks to Simon Emson for the professional manner in which he invigilated the exams in the library.

There will be a Leaver’s Assembly on Friday 7th July where final awards and rewards will be presented to the students.  Invitation letters will be sent out shortly.

On July 10th/11th Colour Sergeant Graham Luke will be visiting Ascension to complete the entrance interviews and tasks for the Army applicant.  CSgt Luke will also give a career presentation at Two Boats School to some students.  This presentation will be open to members of the public.  If you are interested in attending or would like to talk to CSgt Luke about a career in the Army please contact me by email on soo.matthews@ascension.gov.ac

Keeping in the same vein Year 10 are currently undertaking their work experience interviews.  Many thanks to the organisations who have supported the school in offering placements.  It is a key part of their learning and really helps students to experience real life and decide whether they really are interested in their dream career.

Last week we were also fortunate to host a visit from the Minden band.  With the exception of year 10 who were doing exams, the whole school listened in rapture as the band entertained us with a wide variety of music including nursery rhymes mixed in with other tunes and the football medley.  What a fantastic way to spend the afternoon.
