Ascension : News From The Church
Submitted by The Islander (Clive & Jenny Duncan) 18.05.2006 (Article Archived on 01.06.2006)

Bishop John is planning to visit Ascension Island in September and will do a confirmation on Sunday 17 September.

Dear Friends,

Bishop John is planning to visit Ascension Island in September and will do a confirmation on Sunday 17 September.  Confirmation classes will be starting in June, date and time will be announced shortly.

Just a reminder that we will be outside the Georgetown shop this coming Saturday from 9 am for the mile of coins.  Don't miss this opportunity to get rid of all those coins you have been accumulating and make a fresh start.

Have you seen the Barbecue stand and accessories at the back of St. Mary's Church which will be auctioned on the day of the Fair?  If you are passing the Church do drop in and have a look.

When Jenny and I arrived here three years ago, one thing that caught our attention was a lemon tree growing near the main gate.  We had a closer look at the tree and found a number of fruit buds which we watched very closely over the next couple of days but sadly the fruit died when the flower buds dropped off.  The same thing happened again a few months later.  However, before the tree started budding again, we had some pruning done and the dead branches burned.  We continued to nurse the tree and were delighted when some new shoots appeared, but still no lemons. What happened to the tree?  It died and all we have left to remember it by is a circle of small stones where it once stood.

In the Gospel last Sunday Jesus said that if we break off from him we will die spiritually and will only be fit to be burnt like the dead branches from our famous lemon tree.  However, if we can but try and remain linked with God we can be sure to bear the fruit that he intends us to bear.

Have a pleasant and enjoyable week.

Canon Clive.
