Dear Friends, Last Sunday at our Mothering Sunday Service St. Mary’s Church was packed to capacity with a congregation of 176. Mothering Sunday does not only mean that you come to church to get a posy for your mum or to give her a gift. It really has a very special meaning to it. The very beginning of Mothering Sunday was quite different to how we celebrate it today. The church wanted all their people who worship God to visit their mother Church, which is the main church in their parish where they were born. For example if people were working away from home they were expected to return to celebrate this day with their families and bring for them a fruitcake and a posy of daffodils. Mothering Sunday originally celebrated the idea of the church as Mother of Us All. God can be described as Mother as well as Father. You may think that saying God is Mother is extraordinary but it is not because we think of God’s love in Jesus through this way. We think of Compassion and self-sacrifice that features so often in Motherhood. God is the only perfect parent as our parents are only human beings and cannot be as perfect as they would like to be. During the service we had Dawn and Johnny leading the singing with guitars, the Choir singing “My God Loves Me” and Johnny and myself doing a duet “Medals for Mother” during the distribution of the daffodil posies to all the children to give to their mothers. The Guides sang “Thank You Jesus For My Mum” after all the posies were distributed. All in all it was a splendid, cheerful and for some an emotional day. This service cannot be held without a tear been shed. No matter where our mothers are whether they are still with us or has pass on, whether we are parents ourselves our Mother will always be captured in our Hearts. Sunday evening at Two Boats Club people complimented on the service so I know it was thoroughly enjoyed by all. I just like to Thank Shirley, Kate and Elizabeth who helped Fr C & I to prepare the posies, RAF for allowing the daffodils to be flown in and Dawn & Johnny our guitarists. DON’T FORGET WE ARE IN URGENT NEED FOR 2 CHURCH WARDENS, ALTERNATE WARDEN AND COUNCIL MEMBERS TO SERVE ON THE CHURCH COUNCIL FROM 23RD APRIL. IF WE DO NOT HAVE ANYONE TO SERVE FROM HERE THEN IT COULD MEAN THAT ST. MARY’S WILL RUN DIRECTLY BY A CHURCH COUNCIL FROM ST. HELENA. WOULD YOU LIKE THIS TO HAPPEN???? WE HAVE JUST ON 900+ PEOPLE ON ASCENSION SURELY THERE’S ABOUT 8 PEOPLE OUT THERE WHO WILL KEEP OUR CHURCH OPERATIONAL.
Fr Clive will be back next week…………………
Have a great week……………
God Bless
Cheryl
