Water play – on a big big scale. Forget the bath toys, the paddling pool, even the garden hose. We are talking the biggest and best water squirter on the island! The FIRE ENGINE! Yes Ladybirds have been in training – and we are talking new recruits queuing up to join here! Well anything to get their hands on the water sprayers. On our latest adventure the Ladybirds were invited to the SERCO Fire department at the airhead.
We were all very impressed with the trip – while some children had a tour of parts of the island normally only the Donkeys frequent, the Firemen gave a fire demonstration – lighting fires and showing the children what to do should they see a fire… Call for mum or Dad. They then showed the children how their special clothes give them protection and their equipment puts out the fire. Next came the highlight of many childrens day – a fire-engine whizzing down the runway with sirens woo-wooing and lights flash-flashing and water whoosh-whooshing!!! The firemen then helped the children to climb up and in and on and under the fire-engine. I think they all know now where the magic woo-woo button is and the water joystick – it beats a playstation any day – I don’t suppose you could set one up to water my tomatoes could you?
Then for those who had passed their initial training there was a real treat – an actual ride in the fire engine – with the lights, and sirens – up and down the runway. For any grown ups reading this – how much would you have loved the chance to do that as a child, these are the things that make happy dreams and wonderful memories.
Huge thanks to Mal, Stuart, John, Mark, Graham and Nathan and all those who helped make the trip possible. Next time can the mums have a ride in the fire engine too???
