The following decisions were taken at the Island Council meeting held on 10 March 2005:
National Protected Areas: Green Mountain
Council agreed that HE the Governor be asked to make an Order declaring Green Mountain to be a National Park. The official opening is scheduled for the weekend of 25 and 26 June 2005. The Draft Regulations for the National Park were approved, subject to amendment and upon completion of re-drafting by the Attorney-General’s Chambers a further public consultation exercise would be undertaken by the Conservation Officer.
Amendment to Fishery Limits (Ascension) Ordinance
Council unanimously agreed the amendment to increase the penalties under the Ordinance.
Harbours (Ascension) Ordinance
The Draft Ordinance was approved, subject to some very minor amendments.
Island Council Ordinance
Council considered a preliminary re-draft of this Ordinance prepared by the Attorney General. Council endorsed the broad principles of the draft and suggested various amendments.
Policy on Sale/Lease of Crown Land
Council agreed a draft action plan produced by the AG to establish a process for the sale or lease of land.
Copies of the amendments to the Fishery Limits (Ascension) Ordinance and the Harbours (Ascension) Ordinance are available from the Clerk of Council on request.
The Governor will be visiting the island between 5 and 14 April 2005 during which time he will chair a formal Council meeting set for 7 April 2005.
