Ascension : Vacancy: Head Teacher, (re-advertised) Ascension Island Government
Submitted by The Islander (Gavin Yon) 23.03.2005 (Article Archived on 06.04.2005)

With the present Head Teacher of Two Boats School due to retire in August 2005,

With the present Head Teacher of Two Boats School due to retire in August 2005, the Ascension Island Government is now seeking to identify his successor to lead the school into the academic year, which starts in September 2005.  The school serves all children on Ascension Island between the ages of 4 and 16 at which time they sit GCSE.  There are currently 100 children on roll.

The Head Teacher will be responsible for delivery of the curriculum to achieve high academic standards, paying particular attention to the core subjects and special needs.  He or she will need to build strong links with the local community delivering an Adult Education programme and encouraging maximum use of a Community Learning Resource Centre.

The successful candidate will be a qualified teacher with a thorough and current understanding of the requirements of the UK National Curriculum.  He or she will probably already have held a headship at some time in the recent past but will certainly have experience of managing the delivery of education services and will need to demonstrate the capability of leading a change programme to achieve higher levels of performance.

This post therefore calls for someone with excellent leadership and communication skills combined with a flexible approach to getting things done.  He or she must be versatile with a good sense of humour and be able to remain calm under pressure.  Experience of having worked overseas before would be an advantage.

The salary for the post is circa £43,000 and will depend on qualifications and experience (subject to local tax). Benefits include allowances, rent free accommodation and a car.

A 2-year contract will be offered and the successful candidate will be expected to take up post in September 2005.
