Stedson Stroud represents Ascension at International Convention on Biological Diversity in Thailand

Stedson Stroud represents Ascension at International Convention on Biological Diversity in Thailand.

Stedson Stroud left Ascension on the 29th January 2005 to attend a Convention on Biological Diversity in Thailand. He returned to England on Sunday 13th February and has sent in the following report.

Arrived back from Bangkok yesterday and leaving for Cambridge today.

The conference was very interesting and the British delegation was very good but had little or knowledge of diversity on the south atlantic islands.

I briefed them on the problems we have both marine and land based each morning and sat with hundreds of delegates from islands around the world.

We discussed the way forward on island biodiversity sometime until 3 in the morning finalising the wording to suit all language and cultures.  I was the only representative from the south atlantic islands and the British delegates thought my input was extremely useful.

I also attended  two seminars about the eradication of invasive alien species from islands presented by Chris Denny and Alan Saunders - from the University of Auckland NZ.

Stedson will spend 2 weeks training at the Botanical Gardens in Cambridge and 1 week at Kew Botanical Gardens after which he will return to Ascension to continue his work with Ascension Conservation.
