Many people will be aware that Joe Terry, the Shelco Marketing Executive, is currently on Ascension.

He is investigating the possibility of building some houses on the island, linked to the introduction of a civilian air charter operation.  Once he has completed his research he will be reporting back to the group of investors who will be providing the funds for the investment on the feasibility of the proposal.  If the investors decide that the project is feasible a proposal will then be put to the Island Council by Shelco for discussion.

Mr Terry met with the Island Council on Thursday 20th May 2004 to outline the work that he has been doing during this visit. Whilst the Island Council wishes to encourage private sector investment no commitments from the government have been asked for or given at this stage.

The Island Council took the opportunity to outline some of its policies about major inward investment projects. These include:

  • All major construction projects should where possible connect up with the island infrastructure;
  • All major constructions should be designed to be sympathetic to the existing community;
  • All construction should take account of the special environmental features on Ascension;
