A rather sneaky start to this week’s hash……. All the way in the track to the very start of the Bullock’s Pond Letterbox. Thankfully Sniffy waited out at the parking area to direct the hounds in. Amazing where some cars on this island can go!
At the huddle, all the usual Asi hazards were mentioned, including a rocky overhang at one point. We were warned to be careful and not to fall over the side! Since no short-legged hashers (well, no children at least) were along, the options were dispensed with. Everyone was expected to do the full route!
The on-on headed the hares in the direction of Bullock’s Pond, but this being a hash, it wasn’t going to be that easy. A few little zigs here and zags there, a few boulders to hop over, guava to dodge, bar checks to figure out and we finally made it to the first circle check. Another bar check, another circle check and finally the pond was in sight!
Another bar check found Dipstick and Bloodsucker well off the track, and deciding to keep climbing…..who wants to give up ground on Ascension? Next thing they knew they had spotted hash and suddenly, as the others climbed up a particularly tricky cliff, they found themselves out in front! Of course, it didn’t last long, as the group continued zigging and zagging until they were climbing up a ridgeline. At least it wasn’t the ridge that led to Duck Pond, so a collective sigh of relief was heard all round.
About this time a lone figure was spotted way over on Middleton’s Ridge. Was it Uncle Fester? Sure enough, it was. We thought he spotted us eventually, and then the race was on to get back to the vehicles before he did!
Of course, this being Ascension, all uphills are followed by a downhill. And vice versa, as we were soon to find out. The gully at the bottom was overgrown with guava, and a few hounds were a tad uneasy about beating their way through it. No problem, however, we weren’t coming out the gully. Nope, we were climbing back up the other side of the ravine! Oh no, this is the ravine that accessed Duck Pond. They wouldn’t, would they?
Up on the ridge, we found another circle check…..I believe this was the fifth of the promised four circle checks! A lot of anxious looks on the hares’ faces as Duck Pond was pointed out to a few folks who’d never been up there. All were pleasantly relieved when the on-on was called, and it was in the direction of downhill! Albeit with the warning that the dangerous overhang was up ahead. No slips here, but it wasn’t long before Two Will Do lost her footing and landed on her butt! She bounced right back up, and continued on without a care.
We kept going, farther and farther down the hill. The vehicles were getting closer, the end was near, we could almost taste the cool drinks. Two Will Do managed another fall, landing even more heavily this time. She’s probably nursing a few bruises this week. We all held our breaths for the rest of the hash, hoping that two would truly do for her.
All arrived back safe and sound. Wood was gathered for a fire, and a nice time was had by all. Even Tommy the Tractor helped collect firewood, although no one could remember seeing him on the hash!
Well done, Sniffy and Dozy Ha’peth! Great hash…..a somewhat different take on the area!
Next Week: Lady Hill Cairn
Hares: Ole Gollywaddler & Mucky Princess
