Some visitors came to our school on Tuesday 9th March. They were a team of divers, here on an expedition. The team consisted of a lady and three gentlemen. They were wearing a uniform, which was a blue T-shirt and shorts. They told us they were here to count the Hawksbill Turtles and find out what kinds of fish are around Ascension’s coast. They started off with an introduction of a video tape. The video showed lots of different colourful fish, which we could identify. When we were naming them and we were correct, we had a sweet as a reward. We also saw some slides of the Hawksbill Turtles. We learnt that these turtles had a beak like a hawk and that they are smaller than the green turtle. We also learnt that they are becoming extinct. We saw slides of how they are tagged and released back into the sea.

Then we were able to see the diving equipment. We thought they were really cool. We had favourite pieces of equipment. We liked the camera, the glow stick, the slate and of course the magical sausage.

We all thought that they team were really brave people and Courtney is very good at using the camera. We also felt they would make good teachers. We would like to say a big thank you from all of us in Year 5. Happy diving!!!!!

RAF Diving Team

On Tuesday 9th March the RAF Diving team came to visit Middle School, t report to us about their underwater expedition, to survey the fish and turtles.

They began their talk by introducing themselves and then showing us a short video. The team had dived all around the Ascension coast and had captured, on a video, a selection of fish. We were able to identify the majority of fish and were rewarded by sweets.

The diving group helped Tara and Emma to catch the Hawksbill Turtles so they could be tagged. The team caught four turtles. They measured the length and width of the shell. They even gave them names. To catch the turtles they needed two divers to surround it. The turtles wee difficult to catch because they had sharp edges on their shell and they were very fast. After the video, they showed us their diving equipment. The divers explained to us how they use hand signals to communicate underwater.

We thoroughly enjoyed the divers visit and thank them for coming .Year 6
