ASCENSION ISLAND IMMIGRATION ORDINANCE AND REGULATIONS 2004

Following the public consultation exercise undertaken in September 2003 to discuss Right of Abode on Ascension Island, Legal Draftsman, Michael Bradley QC, was tasked with producing a Draft Immigration Ordinance and Regulations.  A copy of this Draft is now available for public scrutiny at the Administrator’s Office, the Clerk of Council’s Office or from one of the Councillors.

A further public consultation exercise will be carried out in early April and you might like to familiarise yourself with these documents so that you can raise any queries you may have at this time.

This Ordinance “Provides for the creation of Ascension Island Status and the right to live permanently on the island, and of a system of work permits, to control entry to the Island, to establish an immigration system, to deal with questions of asylum and deportation, to establish boards to deal with the subject matter of this Ordinance, and for matters associated therewith or incidental thereto.

As you can see from the above extract, this is a very important piece of legislation which will determine the future of Ascension Island and its people.  You are therefore encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity to have an input into the final version prior to its enactment.

Sandra Benjamin

Clerk of Councils
