Past week’s Weather

UK : A cloudy start to the week with rain at times.  High pressure from mid-week led to foggy mornings and very warm sunny afternoons with some isolated heavy showers.

Falklands: A settled and mild start to the week with strong W to NW’ly winds.  A wet end to the week with 21.2 mm recorded over the weekend.

Ascension:  Mostly sunny with some cloud and the occasional showers, except for Saturday…which was, well, very wet!

St. Helena: Mostly cloudy week with occasional showers.  Wednesday and Thursday were especially wet with 5.3 mm over the two days.

They say the weather never stops and this week has been no exception, both at home and abroad.  Some extreme weather across the world this week has been:

·    Mon 31st May Central America – Having recently suffered the affects of a local volcanic eruption, the people of Guatemala, El Salvador and southern Mexico suffered further from the remnants of Tropical Storm Agatha with heavy rain leading to mudslides and flooding.  This sounds a bit like the beginning of 2012!? We’re all doomed!!!

·    Tues 1st June India – Severe heatwave with temperatures reaching close to 50 C!  Is it possible to cool down with a curry in that heat?

·    Wed 2nd June Canada – Unseasonable warmth and dry conditions lead to raging forest fires across Quebec Province.

·    Thurs 3rd June Australia – Tornado rips through a town in New South Wales with damaging winds of 90 mph! Strewth mate, at least it wasn’t a Willy-Willy!

·    Fri 4th June Middle East – Cyclone Phet affects Oman giving violent rain and strong winds.   140 – 180 mm of rain recorded in places in 12 hours.  Oh man, that’s a lot of rain!

·    Sat 5th June Ascension Island – A bit of a wet day on the typically tropical island paradise.  More than the entire June average rainfall of 12.2 mm at the Airhead was recorded with 12.4 mm of rain falling in just 9 hours!

Sun 6th June USA – Tornadoes and thunderstorms leave an 8 mile path of destruction in the US Midwest leading to a nuclear power plant closing and a graduation ceremony being postponed after the roof and back wall of a local school gymnasium were blown away!
