Ascension : Sugar Bowl
Submitted by The Islander (Gavin Yon) 04.03.2004 (Article Archived on 18.03.2004)

This weeks Sugar Bowl was again a shotgun start with players even employing caddies now.

This weeks Sugar Bowl was again a shotgun start with players even employing caddies now. Young Daniel Thomas, acting as caddy for father Paul, started the event and off they went, sun beating down as the players strode the back nine.

The Scots were out in force and not surprisingly were the red hot favourites, but true to their national traditions in most ball sports, came in last!!!!

Obviously Gary didn't want another traumatic week and together with Paul Thomas, Jenni and the formidable Ghosty, went on to victory by a single stroke. Jenni has apparently been signed up by certain former eastern Block states to give lessons, she starts in Prague next week, which means that Lee might be allowed into the Mess Bar!!! Beware.  Ghosty was overcome with emotion to have been part of a team winning such a prestigious event and upon receiving his winning certificate said, "This is being better than being the course record holder, I'll always treasure it". We believe that his certificate now has pride of place on the wall of the ESS rest room in the Combined Mess.

Claire was downhearted in her defence of the trophy, which I understand is now in the hands of the fabled trophy embellisher, ready for handing over to this weeks winners. However Claire soon learned that, despite playing in a scramble, its a lonely game sometimes, particularly when your team-mates don't reach the ladies tee on the first hole!!!!!

The after game debate raged on, to the extent that it completely wiped out the clubs stock of bottled Castle. (Lennie, more stock please). This debate in itself raised a couple of questions, firstly Al why all the blood, surely someone playing off 12 shouldn't spend all his time in the bush. Secondly, what did John Wright mean when commenting on tents and 103's?? If you weren't there it will forever remain a mystery.

There was just the two 2 balls this week and with Jenni going for the Treble next week it should make for an interesting afternoon, unless of course she's matched with Lee and Al.

There is a rumour circulating that other parties want to join in the Thursday event, well on that front we'll have to see but this is strictly an event for airheads only.

More on the Sugar Bowl front next week and then you can read how and if the trophy has taken on a new look to add to the fine additions made by Miss Marshall following her win last week. Also there will be a small update on the Post AOC's Competition. Your author and other players are suffering from sun stroke so things are still hazy and other facts will need inventing before going to print, plus I'm trying to find the rest of me' clubs.

Onwards and upwards.
