THE DAY OF PENTECOST.

Last Sunday we celebrated the great day of Pentecost when the disciples received the power of the Holy Spirit.

Before Jesus ascended into heaven he told the disciples “I am sending you the gift promised by my Father; wait here in the city until you are armed with power from above.”

They returned to Jerusalem and continued to meet together in the upper room where they virtually lived in hiding.     But after Pentecost they were a changed people and began doing things they didn’t think they were capable of.

They were behind closed doors when suddenly they heard what sounded like a powerful wind, the noise of which

filled the entire house in which they were sitting and something appeared to them that seemed liked tongues of fire; these separated and came to rest on the head of each of them.  They were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak foreign languages as the Spirit gave them the gift of speech.

Jesus knew the disciples needed help when he handed his entire work to them and sent them the Spirit.  We also have been given work to do but can only be done with the help of the power of the Spirit.

Have a pleasant week.

Canon Clive
