Funding for Conservation Projects
Recent funding for conservation work in the South Atlantic region has included:
Representation of the South Atlantic Overseas Territories at the recent workshop on climate change and invasive species in New Zealand – attended by Olivia Renshaw. JNCC (Joint Nature Conservation Committee) received funding from Defra (Department for Envirnment, Food and Rural Affairs, Huw Thomas – invasives team) to enable Olivia to attend the conference in Auckland in April. The funding covered all expenses, with no cost to AIG. Olivia would like to thank in particular:
Defra for providing the funding to allow the South Atlantic Region be represented at such an important conference. Participants were able to share successes and challenges experienced in the management of invasive alien species. In spite of the geographic, cultural, political and economic differences across islands and island regions, many common themes emerged. This workshop was the result of a partnership between governments and agencies around the world, convened under the umbrella of the Convention on Biological Diversity, and made possible by generous sponsorships and cooperation.
Tara Pelembe and John Henson Webb from JNCC for organising the trip and supporting Olivia whilst in New Zealand. Their help was very much appreciated.
Ascension Island Government for allowing Olivia the time to attend the workshop and the Conservation team who ensured work was kept on schedule, despite their current shortage of staff.

Funding has been provided to the Ascension Island Government for a project that is nature conservation priority. This funding has been given to JNCC from Defra for nature conservation work in the UK Overseas Territories. The funding is a portion of an amount that has been given to JNCC, as announced by Minister Huw Irranca-Davies in his Darwin lecture a last year. This money will enable the continuation of valuable conservation activities on the Island. We would like to thank Tara Pelembe and Dr Anton Wolfaardt from JNCC for their continued support for conservation projects on Ascension.
The Conservation Office will be closed on Friday 14th May 2010 for Ascension Day and Saturday 15th May due to the Ascension Day Fair.
