Conservation Department

The Ascension Island Government requires a Field Worker to work in their Conservation Department. In close consultation with AIG and other stakeholders on Ascension and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) in the UK, the Conservation Field Worker will be required to assist with the implementation of a seabird monitoring plan and also take appropriate action to ensure that Ascension Island remains free from feral cats. 

 

The principle duties of the post are:

Ø  Implementation of seabird monitoring plan (this includes regular visits to monitoring sites)

Ø  Ensuring that Ascension Island remains feral cat free ( this includes trapping to kill suspected feral cats)

Ø  Maintaining a domestic cat database

Ø  Maintaining and servicing of all equipment used

Ø  Reporting regularly to the Conservation Officer and RSPB staff

Ø  Assisting in data gathering

Ø  Assisting with rodent control and monitoring in seabird nesting areas

Ø  Working with visiting scientists on projects.

 

The successful applicant should:

 

  • Have a good understanding of the principles of conservation
  • Have the ability to implement plans
  • Have the ability to work independently to a high standard, and be confident and competent working unsupervised
  • Have good IT skills and a proven ability to write reports
  • Be physically fit and able to walk long distances over rugged terrain on a daily basis
  • Have experience of working in outdoor field work
  • Have a valid drivers licence for classes A, B & C vehicles.

 

The post, which reports to the Conservation Officer, is offered on a household status basis (only suitable for a person already living on Ascension who is a member of another employee’s household) for a period of one year.  The Job is graded at circa Level 2 with a minimum and maximum salary band of £4,225.00 - £7,935.00 per annum.  The successful applicant’s salary will fall within this salary band and will depend on qualifications and experience.
