Ascension : 1ST ASCENSION GIRLGUIDING UNIT’S RUNWAY DASH FUNDRAISER Submitted by The Islander (Islander Editors) 11.03.2010 (Article Archived on 25.03.2010)
Sunday 28th Feb 10, at 8:30 a.m. over 120 participants was at the starting line of the Runway to compete in the Runway Dash in aid of 1st Ascension Girlguiding Centenary Camp and Guides’ Mini Bus Fund also Breast Cancer Awareness in St. Helena.
There were babies as young as 4 months old taking part!! Before the Dash began pink metal Breast Cancer ribbon pins and friendship bracelets were issued. Once HH The Administrator Mr. Denny said “Ready….Steady…..Go” there was a stampede of colourful mass on bicycles, trikes, prams, toy car-skaters, roller-blades and Kelis’ battery operated jeep going at 3mph strewn across the runway. Kelis didn’t go far as it was slower then what her dad was walking so it was abandoned and she rode on his neck!!
The sun shone brightly but this did not put a damper on the participants they even return with smiles on their faces!! June Coleman was running to Georgetown on my way to the airhead, but later she was standing at the start line ready for the Dash and came in at 49 minutes!! Well done June. Major Eric cycled about sorting his Security out with the water stops before making his way to the end of the runway, came to the finish line and dashed off again to support the last in…..bless!
Dr. Milenko came back like Billy Whizz in 10 mins on his bicycle, following 5 mins later by Jeffrey Francis and Pete Gillies a min later. Nathaniel, Lauren, Nireeka and Shannon Duncan all did brilliantly on foot. The first baby to return was Molly Duncan (58 mins), been pushed along in her pram by her dad……..although the heat was on the children came back full of beans!! Nor did Matti’s floral Boobs wilted along the way!!! Once all had returned we made our way to the Terminal “cage” where the presentation of medallions and ribbons took place to ALL participants by The Administrator.
I was shocked to receive an enormous amount of photos taken by the Headteacher, Soo Matthews of every single person on the runway and doing the dash herself!!!
It was yet another successful event and the Guides, Leaders and I would like to THANK:-
Major Eric
Wing Cdr Duguid
