Ascension : News from St Mary's Church
Submitted by The Islander (Clive & Jenny Duncan) 11.03.2010 (Article Archived on 25.03.2010)

LUKE’S GOSPEL 13: 1-9

The parable that Jesus told about the fig tree is Luke’s Gospel tells us of the second chance.  The fig tree was a very privileged tree because it was planted in a vineyard which was very special place for a fig tree.  It looked well but was barren.  The owner was disappointed and gave an order for it to be cut down but the gardener pleaded with the owner to leave it for another year, one more opportunity to bear fruit.

As with the fig tree, we are all given another chance to get it right with God.  But scripture makes it clear that there is such a thing as a last chance.  It is only because God is merciful that he goes not giving people chances, but there is a limit.

Have a pleasant week.
